Dear A.A,
In general `proper' Feng Shui is about improving one's Earth Luck.
An understanding of one's Pillars and making full use of one's element and strength i.e. to map one's Heaven Luck and then try to `change' things is another luck.
It is said that improving one's Heaven and Earth luck would indeed help a person.

As mentioned earlier, Feng Shui and Pillars can help to improve one's luck and it should be looked at in a holistic way. As it comprises many `modules'.
Proper use of the above, can indeed help to improve one's luck and chances.

As each apartment is unique, it is hard to provide a standard `answer'. The Feng Shui of the house needs to be properly analysed especially using Shapes and Form.
It is good that you also have an initial `impression' on the apartment.
